JASPER
WHITLOCK HALE*So here we are, fighting and trying to hide the scars.
I'll be home tonight, take a breath and softly say goodbye.
The lonely road, the one that I should try to walk alone.
I'll be home tonight, take a breath and softly say goodbye.
*Name: Jasper Whitlock Hale
*Nicknames: Jazz, Jazzy
*Gender: Male
*Birthday: December 21st (estimate) 1843
*Date of turn: Beginning of 1863
*Age: Being twenty when he was turned, Jasper still looks that old
*Species: Vegetarian vampire
*Sexuality: Alice. So that means straight.
*Ability: Empathy; the ability to feel and manipulate the feelings of others. Jasper thus is capable of manipulating the emotions and mood of people or vampires around him - it even works on Bella.
*Height: 6'3"
*Weight: Unknown, looks slender yet muscled
*Hair: Blonde, curlish, not very short cropped. At times it can look a lot as if a bomb exploded in it.
*Eyes: A reddish-gold shade. You can see that it's a very peculiar gold color, not the honey-gold colour of other veggies, but with a hint of orange or red in it.
*Tattoos/Scars: Jaspers entire body is covered with myriad crescent-shaped scars - bites from other vampires, sustained during his years in the newborn army. They cover literally his entire body - torso, neck, face. They are only visible for human eyes in very bright light from close inspection, but vampires can see them in their first glance.
*General Appearance: Jasper stands at a 6 ft 3, a lean but muscled guy. With a pale, marble-like skin he fits perfectly well in with the 'Cullen Coven'. He moves fast and certain, having a history of 'warriorship' behind him. It's still visible in everything he does, from the cold look on his face to the purposeful movements. His body language usually is quite distant and reserved, as if he just doesn't want to be close to someone, aside from other Cullens. His clothes are normally fashionable and stylish, as they're handpicked by Alice - after a in her eyes disaster when he went shopping, she forbade him to shop in the next ten years.

*Likes:
* Alice; Alice is his hope, his rock, his anchor. She keeps him sane, she has saved what was left of his humanity. Aside from that, she's just his frightening little monster.
* Solitude; considering the fact Jasper can feel every single emotion anyone close to him has, it's not difficult to come up with a reason why he would prefer being alone.
* Music; it seems to be a Cullen trait, which he's pretty fond of. It's like a diminutive form of his power, influencing emotions. Besides, he likes to play the violin.
* His family; what is there to say about this? They never abandoned him, they were there for him if he needed them. He just wants to do the same for them, and he's just a protective, loving kind of guy if he has the chance. Besides, how many vampires will just open their arms for someone with his appearance without knowing him? He owes them.
* Victory; yerssss. Survival? Rings a bell, that word? Jaspers life as vampire was destined for victory, being the second-in-command over a newborn vampire army.
* Fast cars; another family trait. Slow and responsible driving doesn't seems to something for them, and Jasper's just like the others, he likes fast cars... And bikes.
* Academies; Jasper is an intelligent guy and loves a challenge every now and then. For example, he once studied philosophy, and, well, he might just some more academic studies.
* Challenges; what's not to like about a challenge?i]
*Dislikes:
* Alice being hurt; Alice is everything for him, she's the light in his eyes and the breath in his lungs. He'd go insane if Alice was badly hurt.
* Losing control; Jasper knows what a monster is... He's been one himself for too long a time. He doesn't want to be that killer again.
* Being a burden to someone; sweet Southern Gentlemen don't like to burden anyone. Certainly if that specific person has been a crimson vampire for over a century, actively satisfying his thirst the moment he felt it and is still adjusting to 'veggie-style'.
* Humans... Well, their blood.; the scent of it, the warmth still attracts to him. It takes some restraint to not jump up and suck 'em dry.
* Large crowds; they seem to assault Jasper. All those contradictory feelings... It drives him mad at times. ?
*Strengths:
* Military experience
* Excellent fighter
* Influencing people
* His love for Alice
*Weaknesses:
* His love for Alice and his family
* Control around (bleeding) humans
* His empathy - crowds are a disaster
* Still feels inferior to the other Cullens
*Habits/Quirks:
* Always keeping an eye on Alice, as far as possible
* Staring outside when contemplating something
* 'Studying' late
*Fears:
* Losing Alice
* Losing control
* That Alice one day finds someone better than him (as he's sure there are lots of them around)
*Secrets:
* Still struggles daily with being and staying a veggie
* His fear of losing control
*Overall Personality:
There is so much to say about Jasper, as he's a very complex person with many, many sides. One of Bellas friends once described him as 'the blonde who looks like he's in pain', which adresses his biggest issue in his vampiric life. Jasper has lived as a true crimson vampire for over a century, and human blood still lures him. It's hard for him to keep in control and not just drink 'em empty. The concentrated look on his face can be easily mistaken for cold, arrogant and in pain, which to some extent is true. But this is mostly around humans, which he tries to avoid a little. He doesn't want to be a monster, but he knows he was and maybe still is. That's a burden on his mind and conscience. His feelings of guilt are phenomenal. It's hard enough to change humans into vampires altogether, leave alone if you can feel anything they feel, which is the case for Jasper.
Due to that empathic power, he prefers being alone or with a few others, as to keep his feelings in balance and his own. He lives in a climate of emotions, always being 'bombarded' with them. Every once in a while he just wants some peace and loneliness, having the chance of feeling only his own emotions.
This also shows he's a good guy. His empathic power could cause tremendous troubles, if he'd choose to use them for malignant goals. Instead, if he uses them they're to calm and/or soothe people, help them feel at ease, not make them feel angry and in pain.
Around other vampires, especially the ones he knows for some length, he's a charismatic, flirtatious guy, intelligent and caring, though still a little on his toes as not to make any faults. He's not that much of a talker, leaving the talkative part to Alice than speak up himself, but when he says something, it usually makes sense.
His mindset is very militaristic. After all, the guy was a soldier in his human life and spent a century training an army of newborn vampires. That, above all, shows his strategic skills, as much as his will power and his impressive fighting skills. He knows how to endure pain, which can be easily believed if you see the scars and possibly remember the pain of your own change. The venom truly is mean. His disposition is calm, confident and he somehow emanates some authority, though not the sort people immediately turn to, like with Carlisle.
Jazz is a honest guy, sometimes on the edge of being blunt, and sometimes crossing it. He can keep secrets, of course he can, pretty good even, but he prefers honesty. And really, how good can you keep secrets when your brother can read your mind??
Being with Alice is when he really is himself. She rescued him from a certain fate worse than death in his eyes, and he still owes her for that. Together they make a remarkable pair, as he cheers Alice up when she's depressed due to a vision, and she knows how to cheer him up if things get too much for him.

*Overall History:
Jasper Whitlock Hale was born in Houston, Texas, in the year 1843. His parents were neither poor nor rich, but very well capable of giving their handsome son a proper education. Whether it was what they wanted for him or not, when he was around 16, nearly 17, he lied himself into the Confederate States Army. Due to his charisma and his strategic insights, he quickly ascended through the ranks until he reached the rank of major.
The first night of 1863 changed his life, though. It was the night before the Second Battle of Galveston, where he was assigned to keep an eye on the evacuation of the women and children to a nearby town to keep them safe - just in case. As he rode back to the army camp, he came across three beautiful young women. Gentleman as he was, he stopped, asking whether they needed help. Even when the conversation went the wrong way and he felt he was in danger, he couldn't leave. He was learned to help women, not fear them.
He paid his price for that. Three days later he 'came back in the world of the living', if you could say that. He was a vampire, elected by Maria -because she was the one who turned him- due to his military background. It turns out well; he was good with the newborns. Both in training them, as 'controlling' them. Within a year he got so far promoted he pretty much was Maria's second-in-command, over the heads of Nettie and Lucy, the two other young women. Jasper was put in charge of training the newborns, while another vampire with potential, Peter, was to babysit them.
That went on for several decades, the training of the useful newborns and the 'disposal' of the useless. It was during one of those nights that Jasper noticed that Peter seemed to have a hard time with it. Before he could offer to take over and end it alone, the resaon why showed. The next 'number' was to be brought over and killed, but the strong waves of love he felt coming from Peter told him enough, even if the guy hadn't screamed a warning and took a run. Jasper let them go, even though he knew it was against Maria's wishes.
Many more years passed. Jasper grew more and more depressed, eventually coming to the decision that he had to leave, he had to get out. That decision was transformed into reality when Peter and Charlotte 'visited', telling Jasper about a world where vampires could roam over the streets in the broad daylight (if they were careful) and where they weren't on the edge of real death any moment. He joined them, escaping Maria's reign.
His life went on with ups and downs - mostly downs, almost always after he had fed. It was Peter who noticed it and mentioned it, Peter who figured out that Jasper had a gift, an ability. But that didn't fix the problem. Jasper started to experiment, trying not to feed, but he couldn't restrain himself long enough. So he left Peter & Charlotte, not wanting to be a burden any longer.
The struggle went on, and still rather depressed the year of 1948 started. One day in Philadelphia - it was cold, the rain poured straight down from the sky - Jasper knew he had to seek shelter before he would attract unwanted attention, certainly because he was quite nervous -being out at day wasn't his thing yet- and thirsty, he knew he would have to take a risk. And he did - he dived into a diner, not knowing how much humans would be there. Luckily, not much. There was, however, someone else.
Just as he was busy to keep himself in control, happy that the thirst coloured his eyes black instead of the bright crimson, some little woman came bouncing towards him.She was a vampire, he could sense that, but she was so... friendly and full of love as she came closer. When she apologized him of keeping her waiting, he was pretty shocked. He really didn't know what it meant. But he felt at ease with her, and it had been quite a while ago since he felt so... so much like himself, like a human again. So he merely replied with "I'm sorry, ma'am." before accepting the extended hand. As he will still say when you ask about it; "For the first time in almost a century...He felt hope".
Two years later they 'bumped into the Cullen family', thanks to Alices visions. By then, Alice was everything for him; she had given him hope and part of his humanity, slowly introducing him to the vegetarian idea. With the Cullens, Carlisle helps him with it, trains him to restrain himself. Jasper isn't flawless, though, and slipped quite often. A century of instant gratification isn't jolly good for your self-control. However, he adapted and kept trying, something that's now starting to pay off.
Then, Edward came home. Alice had foreseen it; Jasper felt it. Edward finally felt true love. He was happy for Edward, but not quite so happy when he met the girl in person. After all, humans still were... very, very tempting. As long as he kept distance, he could deal with it. Certainly with Alice nearby, though he came close to ashaming her faith in him. Even in the ballet studio, when her blood was richly spilled, he kept from it. Luckily there was distraction in the form of permanently killing James.
Later, when his pixie organised a birthday party for Bella, the girl cut herself. The sudden scent of a warm, fresh drop of blood proved to be -still- too much for Jasper; he lunged to attack. He was stopped, but he felt enormously guilty for it. So he left, not wanting to risk killing the love of his 'brother' and the best friend of his pixie. He escapes to the Denali, where he stays a while before he trusts himself enough to return home again.
Yet when the entire family leaves, and Bella saves Edward from a certain suicidal death, he owes her. They all move back to Forks, something he actually appreciates. Aside from the bloodlust, he thinks he could like the girl; at least from Edwards point.
When things seem to go wrong in Seattle, it's soon suspected it's a newborn on the loose. Yet, there's way too much damage for that. In the end, Jasper's the one who comes up with the idea of an army. After explaining his past to Bella, he tells the rest why he thinks it might be an army. As soon as he has told it, they all agree it could be. He, reluctantly, starts to train both the Cullens and the wolves when they join in, how to kill the newborns. His strategy worked flawlessy but for one person; himself. He so much wants to be everywhere at once to keep Alice safe -whose more than capable of keeping herself safe- that he gets bitten a few times. However, it's not like he hasn't been before, so he kinda shed it off.
And then the world changed. At least the vampiric world - with the three ancient leaders of the Volturi dead, the future became once again uncertain, leaivng him with an even greater determination to keep his pixie safe. That being said, he never left her side in the years that passed until now, based in Forks but travelling around as well.

The soft but piercing piano music seemed to fill the house. Its tones hid a world of emotion and feelings, thoughts that better never were spoken out loud but nevertheless needed a medium to enter the world. Jasper knew who was playing this probably 'home-made' songs: Edward.
Music was mankind's way of expressing and translating emotions into something else, something real. Music brought joy, fun and beauty in one's life, but could very well be a call to arms, a way to enrage a crowd or to mourn. It was multi-functional, but with only one purpose. One purpose, but more than one meaning. And even though a lot of songs failed to capture emotions and audience, some still did. They drew a new world for you, told a story that couldn't be captivated in mere words. Just like this song, that summoned pictures and thoughts first of joy and love, moment of happiness, only to lose that and draw a state of loss and reaching to -maybe- the unreachable. The soft tones then were replaced by something stronger and definitely darker, before truly trailing away, slowed, only to be interrupted by four words, spoken by Edward. As always, his brother was a step forward.
Jasper turned around: now was as good as any other time. No others were in the house, he thought, but even if they were it didn't really matter. Each of the Cullens had learned to give the others some sense of privacy. With nine people in one house, of whom eight were vampires - now seven out of eight - that wasn't half as easy as it seemed. But they all knew each other well and were close. There weren't much secrets between them. Though of course there were some ways to ensure keeping a secret. For a while, at least. A small smile appeared on his face; Alice had kept a vision secret during their graduation in Forks, almost a hundred years ago, by singing the Battle Hymne in her head. Probably a bit too obvious, but it had helped. While keeping secrets from Edward wasn't that easy (or plain difficult), he could hold himself versus the others. His upbringing as a newborn had been unusual and unpleasant, but some of he skills then acquired still came in handy.
As he came close to the piano, he stopped. "When did you make that one? I haven't heard it before," he asked. Yet as he asked the question, he knew when and even the most likely why. If he could, he would have blushed. Instead, he bowed his head a little. Edward was good with music, both writing it and bringing a piece to life on his piano. Jasper played a violin and through many years of practice was fairly good, but Edward could put in an extra layer, a new depth behind seemingly simple music.
He still felt a bit guilty for leaving so sudden, but he knew they understood it. Each of them was close, if not extremely close, to his or her partner cq. soul mate. They all had seen how Edward had suffered when he had left Bella, and they probably could imagine how Jasper had felt when Alice rather suddenly was gone. Her letter had been a comfort, but not enough. Alice had been his everything. His humanity, his sanity, his heart, his love, his conscience. And because of that he had let her go. If she chose to go, so be it. He would fight until death for her, if she needed or wanted it, and she knew. If her wish had been to be separated, to leave him out of it and give him a chance for his own life, so be it.
